Older adults’ experiences of a computerised cognitive training intervention: a mixed methods study

Objective Computerised cognitive training (CCT) is gaining in popularity and has shown evidence of efficacy improving function. Older adults’ experiences a CCT intervention were explored using mixed methods, focussing on computer literacy engagement.Methods Seven older adults completed pre-operative (pre-habilitation) 12-week post-operative (rehabilitation) as part an ongoing clinical trial. Qualitative interviews conducted post-training to explore data analysed thematic analysis. Three questionnaires used characterise participants: Computer Proficiency Questionnaire-12, Short Anxiety Scale, User-Engagement Scale-Short Form.Results Four key themes identified from the interview data: “I appreciate challenge”, “Persevering through frustration led accomplishment”, “When I start, finish”, “It’s manageable but with support”.Conclusion All participants had positive experiences, including those low computer-literacy skills. interventions should consider utilising regular supervised sessions, achievable, challenging exercises, while reducing improve CCT.KEY POINTSWhat already known about this topic: demonstrated for overall domain-specific function healthy adults, mild impairment.Low adherence common interventions, which limits beneficial outcomes.Negative are major drivers non-adherence attrition.What topic adds: Experiences during often fluctuate, occurs when compare their perceived actual abilities.Recommendations qualitative include use attainable, exercises that can be more efficiently improved skill.Support strategies contributed included sessions (e.g., once week), phone numbers call assistance, screen sharing software resolve problems.
